Etymology of Toxicodendrum:
Gk. toxikon = poison; dendron = tree. Some plants in this genus cause itching, irritation and painful rashes caused by the oozing sap, and even death when the ‘poison ivy’ is burnt and the smoke inhaled.

From the Latin acutus = 'sharp' or 'pointed' and folius = 'leaf'
