For Karl Hermann Zahn (1865–1940), German botanist, high school teacher and professor of geometry, chemistry and material technology at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences. Between 1896 and 1914, he collected a massive number of plants. He became a world authority on Hieracium, and wrote, inter alia, Die Hieracien der Schweiz (1906), Hieracia Florae Mosquensis (1911), Les Hieracium des Alpes Maritimes (1916), and a monograph between 1921 and 1923 on Hieracium, part of a very large genus of flowering plants in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). He recognised 177 subspecies. His work is reflected in Adolf Engler’s Das Pflanzenreich (The Plant Kingdom) (1957) section on Hieracium. His collection is housed in the Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem (25 000 specimens, 2 800 types). His name was misspelled by Hiern.
