Short etymology:
For Jean Frédéric Stadtmann (1762–1807), German physician, botanist and painter. He obtained his medical qualifications from the medical school of the University of Strasbourg and, shortly after, in 1786, emigrated to the Île-de-France (Mauritius). He practised there as a doctor, studied botany, and became an excellent botanical artist. He collected in Madagascar, Mauritius and South Africa, with a keen interest in mainly algae and spermatophytes. He was asked to contribute paintings for the five-volume Encyclopédie Méthodique: Botanique by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Jean Louis Poiret on the Île-de-France (Mauritius).
