Short etymology:
For Martin Staaf (1731–1788), Swedish chief financial officer and director of the East India Company of Gothenburg and correspondent of Linnaeus in 1772. As a businessman, it is known that he had an interest in materials such as porcelain obtained from China and, in 1784, was present at a meeting of the Académie Royale des Sciences to discuss Chinese pharmacopoeia – the use of drugs and their preparation.
