Etymology of Senecio:
La. senex = an old man. The white, hairy pappus of the seeds is reminiscent of an old man’s beard.
Etymology of jacksonii:
Named after Prof. W.P.U. Jackson, president of the Botanical Society of South Africa, who brought the species to Colonel Baker's attention
