Etymology of Selago:
Celtic. sel = sight; jach = salutary, beneficial; referring to its supposed medicinal properties, especially for diseases of the eyes. Another source suggests the derivation is Greek, selagh = flashing. (Allusion unknown.)

From the Latin multi = 'many' and spicata = 'spiked' or 'spike'; usually refering to the flowers in an arrangement of a spike, an inflorescence with single flowers on a stalk arranged with the oldest at the bottom.
