Gk. penta- = five; schistos = a cut, split, divide. The cleft lemma has five divisions.

Biennial to 35 cm. Leaves cauline, linear, with linear glands. Spikelets 8--12 mm long, in an open panicle, awned, glumes tuberculate hairy, pedicels with obscure, linear glands. Oct.--Dec., second year after fire. High rocky slopes, NW, SW (Cedarberg and Hex River Mts to Hottentots Holland).
