Etymology of Ludwigia:
For Christian Gottlieb Ludwig (1709–1773), German botanist and physician and professor of medicine at Leipzig. He studied medicine and botany from 1728 but was forced to discontinue as a result of a lack of funds and took a job as a botanist on an expedition to Africa under Johann Ernst Hebenstreit (1703–1757). He resumed his studies in 1733 at the University of Leipzig, obtaining his PhD in 1737, becoming an associate professor (1740), and full professor of medicine (1747), pathology (1755) and therapy (1758). Ludwig is remembered for his correspondence with Linnaeus, often critical, particularly regarding discussions of the latter’s classification system. He published works on both plants and mineralogy.
