Short etymology:
For Vicente Manuel de Céspedes y Velasco (c 1721–1794). Spanish military man, obtaining the rank of colonel and field marshal while serving in the Spanish royal army. He became Spanish governor of Santiago de Cuba (1781–1782) and East Florida (1784–1790) and was replaced by Juan Nepomuceno de Quesada y Barnuevo. The genus name Lespedeza is the result of a spelling error.
