Indigo is derived from the La. indicus, Gk. indikos, referring to India; La. ferax = bearing. Indigo is blue dye (cf I. tinctoria).

Erect or spreading shrublet, 10--90 cm. Leaves digitately 3-foliolate, leaflets obovate to oblanceolate, glabrous above, thinly hairy beneath; stipules setaceous, spreading. Flowers in racemes on robust peduncles, orange-red to pink, July.--Dec. Lowland and coastal fynbos, below 200 m, SE (Knysna to Port Elizabeth and E Cape).
