Etymology of Amellus:
Gk. amellus = star. Possibly this is the name given by Virgil to a blue daisy that grew on the banks of the river Mella, perhaps similar to Aster amellus, the European michaelmas daisy or Italian aster.
Etymology of asteroides:
From the Latin ‘aster’ / ‘aster’ meaning ‘star’; and the Greek ‘oides’ / ‘oides’ meaning ‘in the form of’.

Silky to softly hairy, woody perennial to 40 cm. Leaves oblanceolate to spathulate. Flower heads discoid or radiate, solitary, white to mauve with yellow disc, pappus of scales and bristles. Oct.--Jan. Coastal dunes, NW, SW, AP (Lambert's Bay to Gansbaai).
