Etymology of Zygophyllum:
Gk. zygon = a yoke; phyllum = leaf. The leaves are usually bifoliolate – the two leaflets are as if ‘yoked together’.

From the Latin teres = 'smooth' or 'tapering' and folium = 'leaf'
