For James Chapman (1831–1872), South African explorer, hunter, trader and photographer. He started exploring, going across the Limpopo River, and reached the Chobe River (1852) to within 110km of Victoria Falls, almost beating David Livingstone in his discovery (1853). In 1854 he went with Samuel H Edwards to parts of Lake Ngami, Northern Bechuanaland (now Botswana), the Okavango River, Damaraland, returning to Walvis Bay in 1855. From 1860–1864, he tried to explore the Zambezi from Victoria Falls to its delta with his brother, Henry, and Thomas Baines (1820–1875) but failed because of misfortune and sickness. He wrote Travels in the Interior of South Africa (1868), published shortly before his death. One of his sons was lost on the Titanic.
