Etymology of Babiana:
Unusual among South African plants in the name being derived from the vernacular Dutch, "baviaantjie", Afrikaans "bobbejaantjie" or its Cape corruption "babiaantjie". The baboon, bobbejaan, is partial to the corms.

Cormous geophyte, 3--10 cm. Leaves often very broad, hairy. Flowers zygomorphic, blue or purple with white markings, fragrant. Aug.--Sept. Coastal flats and dunes, NW, SW, AP, LB (Lambert's Bay to Mossel Bay).
