English translation of botanical names

Roger Edgecombe of the classics department, UCT, has kindly translated latin names of all 1460 species occurring on the Cape Peninsula into their English equivalents. Once incorporated into the database this will be an invaluable resource for understanding and learning species names.

Slide scanning

CASABIO has won a R100,000 contract to scan slides for the SABIF/SANBI portal. Once scanned these images can be incorporated into the CASABIO database, with slide identifications being refined through collaborative use of the database. These slides represent a MAJOR proportion of the existing floral images within South Africa, and it is imperative that they are consolidated into a central and public database.
