About the CASABIO logo

Our aim is to give every visible organism on our earth a home in our database. If it can be seen, it can be appreciated, and thus becomes a meaningful entity that we would be sad to lose. This we have tried to encapsulate in the logo, with Table Mountain, and the Mother City, embraced by mother earth. Home to the start of humanity, and the start of our project, CASABIO.

The entire logo is an eye - the means by which we engage with life around us. Depicted in the centre is a landscape, a landscape brimming with life to be discovered.

The lines represent: red soil, green surface, blue sky - This is the biosphere, our planet - the zone where organisms exist.

Red, green blue and black are the colours in which the base pairs of DNA are depicted, the building blocks of life. The lines represent a DNA helix.

DNA is also the foundation of diversity - the differences between our species of millions of years that make them so intriguing to see and comprehend.

The film strip in black represents the basic element by which we acquire information about plants - images.

The project incorporates multiple scales, all interacting in space and time to give us the diversity represented today: represented here by microscopic DNA, a human eye, the mountain or landscape level and the entire earth.
