The FPOA is a "magazine" containing coloured figures with descriptions of the indigenous flowering plants of Africa. Many new species have been described in this journal and the paintings by a variety of artists are generally of high quality and well reproduced. The descriptions are comprehensive and typically include the nomenclature. The object of the work is stated as to "convey to the reader the beauty and variety of form of the African flora, to stimulate an interest in the study and cultivation ofthe indigenous plants and generally to advance the science of botany". The publication is no longer in print.
